I have recently recived this email regarding bandwidth limits on Residential Customers:

Dear Cox High Speed Internet Customer:

In order to provide all Cox High Speed Internet customers with an optimal online experience, Cox must effectively manage network resources for all of our users. As part of our network management activities, we have modified our acceptable use policy to more clearly define our bandwidth usage limitations.

Privacy note: Cox does NOT track Internet sites that our users visit or files they download – Cox only measures total bandwidth used for network management purposes. Below are frequently asked questions regarding the excessive bandwidth usage policy.

What Are the Current Cox High Speed Internet Residential Bandwidth Limitations?

The Cox High Speed Internet bandwidth usage limitations allow each user 30GB of downloads per month, with a maximum of 2GB per day. Uploads are limited to 7.5GB per month, with a maximum of 1GB per day. This is an extremely high limit – 2GB of content is equal to approximately 60,000 pictures; 2,000 minutes of MP3 music; or three to four full-length movies. These limits are 50-75 times higher than the amount of bandwidth consumed by the average Cox High Speed Internet user.

What Happens If a Customer Exceeds These Bandwidth Limitations?

We have a comprehensive communications plan in place to alert our customers of bandwidth usage in excess of the policy. Customers will receive email notifications regarding bandwidth usage that is beyond the policy limits, as well as a letter communication delivered via US mail for continued disproportionate usage. If a customer continues to exceed these bandwidth limitations, Cox has the right to suspend their account. Once an account is suspended, the user must contact a local Cox customer care representative to discuss his or her account status.

These Limits Are Very High – What Might Cause An Account To Exceed These Limits?

A peer-to-peer file sharing application such as KaZaA, Morpheus or iMesh could cause an account to exceed these limits. These programs operate as file servers by default and offer files from users’ hard drives to other Internet users, possibly causing their accounts to use excessive bandwidth without their knowledge.
If users have wireless home networks, there is a possibility that other people are using the wireless networks without their knowledge and greatly increasing their network usage. Securing any wireless connection with a password should solve this problem.
Users’ computers may be affected by a computer virus. A virus will often send out mass emails from the infected computer without the users’ knowledge. Installing antivirus software and scanning for infections should resolve this issue.

Does Using A File-Sharing Application Violate the Cox Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

No, using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program to download files does not in itself violate the AUP. If the software is already configured not to share files to other users, there should not be a problem. Please visit http://updates.cox.com/cgi-bin3/flo/z/hPkx0EfMwl0Fhs07rH0AJ for more information and instructions for securing most common file-sharing programs.

Does Having A Wireless Home Network Violate the Cox Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

No, however Cox does not provide support for non-Cox installed home networks and users must take precautions to secure any wireless home network. Visit http://updates.cox.com/cgi-bin3/flo/z/hPkx0EfMwl0Fhs0qMk0AF for more information on home networking.

Where Can I View The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

The AUP is available online at http://updates.cox.com/cgi-bin3/flo/z/hPkx0EfMwl0Fhs07rI0AK. If you have further questions regarding this policy, please visit http://updates.cox.com/cgi-bin3/flo/z/hPkx0EfMwl0Fhs0qMk0AF.

Sincerely,

The Cox High Speed Internet Team

I do not agree with their bandwidth limit policy so I am looking into other ISP's. There's a chance I will stay with Cox as a Buissness Customer. If anyone has Cox HSI and has not recived this email yet, make sure you watch out because there is no telling what they will do first. For now, Im going to stick to my normal daily downloads untill they say something.

I need my Anime!

Thats sucks Acid!!

My ADSL account is unlimited download and unlimited upload so I'm lucky - but I often wonder how long it will last, there are only 2 isp's in Oz that offer this. Hopefully everyone else will follow their trend.

I've always been of the opnion that putting download and upload limits on broadbad connections as a total wank. On boradband you'll reach those limits with your eye's closed. Lets face it, you have broadband because you want to download vast amounts. If its just a matter of surfing the web and d/l the occasional file then you would stick with dial up.

Look for another ISP!!

Well, Im in progress of looking for a another ISP, but my dad and myself are looking into Cox Buissness because of the dedicated bandwidth, and services it offers. Im not totaly sure if we want to go into the 3 year contract for the setup fee waver they offer. I might as well pay the 300$ for the setup fees. It might be worth it in the long run.

Here we go again ...

Dear Cox High Speed Internet Customer:

In order to provide all Cox High Speed Internet customers with an optimal online experience, Cox must effectively manage network resources for all of our users. As part of our network management activities, we proactively identify accounts that may be exceeding our bandwidth usage limitations.

Our measurement tools indicate that your account may be exceeding our bandwidth usage limitations. Please note that if the situation is not corrected, your Cox High Speed Internet account may be suspended. Privacy note: Cox does NOT track Internet sites that you visit or files you download – it only measures total bandwidth used for network management purposes. Below are frequently asked questions regarding excessive bandwidth usage.

What Might Cause My Account To Use Excessive Bandwidth?

Often a peer-to-peer file-sharing application such as KaZaa, Morpheus or iMesh may be the problem. These programs operate as file servers by default and offer files from your hard drive to other Internet users, possibly causing your account to use excessive bandwidth without your knowledge.
If you have a wireless home network, there is a possibility that other people are using your wireless network without your knowledge and greatly increasing your network usage. Please refer to the documentation provided with your networking equipment to secure your connection with a password.
Your computer may be affected by a computer virus. A virus will often send out mass emails from your computer without your knowledge. Installing antivirus software on your computer and scanning for possible infections may resolve this issue.

Can I Check My Current Bandwidth Usage?

The development of a tool that will allow you to view your current bandwidth usage is a top priority for Cox. Cox established very high bandwidth usage limitations in order to avoid the need for most customers to monitor their use. We will continue to proactively communicate to customers who exceed bandwidth limits via email and postal mail.

Does Using A File-Sharing Application Violate the Cox Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

No, using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program to download files does not in itself violate the AUP. If your software is already configured not to share files to other users, you should not have a problem. Please visit http://updates.cox.com/cgi-bin3/flo/y/hPtd0EfMws0Fmk07rH0AC for more information and instructions for securing most common file-sharing programs.

Does Having A Wireless Home Network Violate the Cox Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

No, however Cox does not provide support for your home network, unless you have a Cox-installed home networking solution. With any wireless home network, we recommend that you take necessary security measures to protect your connection.

What Will Happen If My Account Continues To Use Excessive Bandwidth?

If the excessive usage is not corrected, your account may be suspended per the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
