Iv'e only seen the first four episodes, and im slightly confused. I'm going to watch them over and over again, until i understand though. If you've already seen it, try watching it again. Maybe it will shed more light on the situation.

Umm if you are still wondering even though it's been months lain is an anime that explores the cyberpunk genre. Lain is a 14 year old girl who builds an interest in the wired (this shows internet equivelant) and slowly seems to lose herself in the tech and the strange happening going on. One of the main plotlines revolves around a message she receives from a dead classmate. I won't say anymore because it could easily lead to spoilers, watch all thirteen eps and then interpret and when you finish and need to ask questions i will check back here. Lain is a great show it may take more than one watch to get a bse understandng and never watch it out of order it will only screw you up.

My sincere apologies, SOS (appropriate non de plume, eh?). I was in other threadcities for the past months.

Anyway, I don't want to give away anything here (as I've done that on many of the other threads here). But I will tell you this:
SEL is unique in the sense that it is the product of 2 types of anime blended together.
See, Abe and Traingle Staff wanted to do a supernatural thriller, of which there are already too many in Japan. Meanwhile, Pioneer wanted a 'commercial' series, one that would show off potential hardware, as Pioneer is a hardware company. (Trust me, its software divisions were the red-headed stepchildren of the company.)
Thus, when Pioneer hired Triangle Staff and Abe to make its series, they took their idea for a supernatural thriller and mde all the mystical details into technological details.

One more detail: Pioneer intended the series for American audiences. Japanisms, so to speak, are not only few but mostly so irrelevant as to be unnoticeable to any but the hardcore otaku. Instead, Americanisms are prominent throughout the series.

So if many of the details don't make sense in a Japanese setting...that's why. The only concession to Japan was setting much of it in downtown Tokyo; other than that, it makes more sense if seen as an American series instead of a Japanese one.
